"2nd to None" - Watercolor & Acrylic  Paint / 18x24 / 2005

This is a watercolor painting I took on as a project, when I found out that Rickie Weeks was doing a rare autograph signing at Price's Collectibles in Wisconsin.

That said, upon hearing of the signing, I had less than a week to finish the painting in time to send it off to be signed.

As you can see, at left, are some of the first few photos of the painting, once I started it.  At the far left, is a photo of most of the "pre-drawing" I did prior to adding the watercolor paint.  I then started to add some of the background elements (outfield wall, sky, etc.).

With these two photos, you see the progression from the start to this point.  I've begun to add details to his uniform and both of his hands, as well as his jersey.

In the photo, at right, you can see the painting progress further.  At this point, I've almost completely finished the background -- the sky, outfield wall, and the tree lining the wall.  I've also added more shading and detail to his jersey, arms, and hands.  In addition, the initial shading and detail is finished on his bat, and I've started to add the base color to his hat.

With the rest of his uniform almost complete, and the background done, I've turned my focus at this point, to his facial coloring and shading.  There's a very distinct shadow across Rickie's face, so I wanted to portray the detail of the photo as well as I could.

The photo, at right, shows the painting in it's "almost finished" form.  I've signed the painting at this point, and is only waiting to dry before being shipped off and signed by Weeks.

These two photos are merely closer looks at the finished painting, prior to Weeks autographing the painting.

All in all, considering this is only my 2nd watercolor painting, I felt like it turned out pretty great.  It's always fun to experiment with a medium I'm not all that familiar with.  I've now painted multiple works with acrylic, oil, and watercolor paints.  I love the challenge of using a new medium -- and watercolors are no exception.

And, here, you can see the painting is back and is signed by Mr. Weeks.  I'm still uncertain whether I'll offer prints of this painting, but it will all depend on what kind of interest I get from fans and visitors to the site.

I would like to thank Price's Collectibles for allowing me to mail-in my painting to be signed by Mr. Weeks -- I really appreciated all their help.  The signature turned out great, and I hope to frame and matte the painting in the coming weeks.  I'll try and add some photos of the painting, once it's framed.

These are just a few closer looks at the painting, and Rickie's signature.  If anyone is interested in buying a print of this painting, e-mail me for a price.

Thanks for taking a look at this painting, and for visiting my site!  I always appreciate everyone who visits the site!  Come back often!
