"The Five-Tooler" - Watercolors / 9x12 / 2005

This is a watercolor of Chicago Cubs prospect, Felix Pie (pronounced Pee-eh).  Felix is one of those rare "Five-Tool" players you often hear about, but seldom see.  Although he stands 6'2", he weighs a mere 175 pounds.  Then again, he just turned 20 years old in February -- so the concensus among scouts is that he will grow more into his frame as he ages.  He is currently at AA, with the West Tennessee Diamond Jaxx -- where he is currently batting: .304 with 16 doubles, 3 triples, 11 home runs, 24 RBI's, and 13 stolen bases.

With these two photos, you see the progression, step-by-step.  Normally, I add most of the pre-drawing completely onto the page before painting, but with watercolors, I wanted to work sort of piece-by-piece.  I've added the initial shading to his jersey, and most of the shading to his right arm and wristband.

In the photo at left, you can see I've added the shading to his batting glove, added more detail to his pants, added the Cubs patch on his right sleeve, and started to add the background.

The picture at right, shows the progression as I've added most of the initial detail and shading to his face and the background behind him.

After finishing this part, I need to go back and lighten up some of his facial features, add the finishing touches to the background, and then finish his jersey.

These are the latest photos of the Felix Pie artwork.  As you can see with the photo, at left, I've lightened up portions of his face, and added most of the final details to his jersey.  And, I've even signed the painting to put on the "seal of approval" if you will.

And, finally, the finished, double-matted, and framed product -- hanging on my wall, amongst my Private Collection.  As a huge Cubs fan, I'm hoping to have this artwork autographed by Felix, but that will be further down the road.

So, stay tuned for photos of that, if I get the painting signed!!  Thanks for checking it out!
